Collaboration with ambiguous (Lighting Design)
We handled the interior design and construction management for Sushi & Charcoal, which opened in December 2023 in Raffles Place.
Mr. Shintani from Araya Shoten, a shop known for high-quality Japanese fish in Singapore, requested: create a space that offers high-quality sushi and charcoal-grilled dishes, with casual standing-style dining and affordable prices, but uncompromising on quality.
Every material, color, and design element was chosen to reflect refined Japanese tradition with a contemporary twist. Lighting, designed in collaboration with Singapore-based studio "ambiguous", transforms the sushi counter into a stage, bringing the textures of walls, tiles, and cuisine vividly to life.
At the heart of the space lies a counter made from reclaimed wood shipped from Nemuro, Hokkaido—once lids for fish tanks on fishing boats. Weathered by saltwater and sea breezes, when first imported, they even smelled of fish! Yet, each plank tells a story. Rather than opting for pristine new timber which is fresh anew and more affordable, we preserved its marks, holes, and history, sealing them in acrylic resin to retain the spirit of the fishermen who once worked upon it.
The result is more than a restaurant interior—it’s an atmosphere that elevates every bite. Guests don’t just eat here; they step into a story.
The chef is incredibly skilled, and guests can enjoy delicious sushi and charcoal-grilled dishes in a thoughtfully designed space. We warmly invite you to visit.
